Custom Fit Bracing

What is a custom knee brace?

A custom knee brace is constructed according to precise and accurate measurements taken from the patient’s mid-thigh to the middle of the lower leg of the injured side. The brace is designed to fit only the dimensions of that patient’s leg.

A custom brace consists of two geared polycentric (metal) hinges built into a rigid carbon composite frame. The brace is held to the patient’s leg by a series of Velcro straps that are secured to the brace.

Custom knee braces limit tibial translation and rotation of the knee joint (ACL/PCL injury), support the knee joint with side to side motion (for LCL/MCL injury), and offload the knee joint (meniscus injury/osteoarthritis).

At the Sport Medicine Clinic, we utilize DonJoy Custom Braces.

Your frame/hinges have a lifetime limited warranty. The pads, straps, and liners for the brace will have a 6 month warranty.

What if my brace stops fitting in the first year after purchase?

If your brace is not fitting correctly, we will re-measure and re-make the brace (up to 1 year after the brace was initially made).

After 1 year, any re-measurements and re-fitting come at an additional charge.

What if I need a replacement of the soft parts on my brace?

Refurbishments may be completed at an additional charge, depending on what parts need replacement or repair. Please contact the Clinic directly for more information.

Why should I get a custom knee brace rather than a regular one from the drugstore?

A Defiance 3 with forcepoint hinge or A22 brace provide maximal support for ACL injuries (stops tibial translation and limits some rotation).

Defiance 3 braces with standard hinge unloads the knee joint when unicompartmental osteoarthritis or meniscus injury are present.

Defiance 3 standard hinge provides maximal support for MCL and LCL injuries.
